About the product

Little jagged, sandy-yellow coloured and cube shaped, these seeds aren’t too common in Western cuisine, although it was grown throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Still grown today in France, Spain and Poland this annual plant flourishes in arid conditions. India, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Morocco and Argentina are now the largest producers. Some find the spice’s bitterness can be off-putting, and, whilst it’s possible to temper it somewhat with toasting, that key characteristic will always remain, and is actually desirable in many cultures’ cuisines. The ground spice is a common component of curry powder, south Indian sambar powder and also in the wonderfully hot, Ethiopian spice mix ‘berbere’. It has also recently been discovered to have blood-sugar regulating properties, to the extent that is it now a spice suggested to many a sufferer of Type-2 diabetes.
