The Indian Family
Dad was born in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Northern India. He studied in Lucknow before moving over to England, only deciding to stay when he met my mother. I have a huge family back in India, all of whom are incredibly supportive, whether directly involved in the business or not.
One of my cousins, Guria, is our spice quality control; her husband, Vivek, is the business brain whilst his father provides expertise in import/export trading. All have extensive knowledge of Indian spices. They are constantly looking for the needle in India’s haystack: wonderful ingredients of an exceptional quality that don’t usually make their way over here.
Amongst the older generation cooking is still a predominantly female pastime. I’ve enjoyed many an hour in the company of my aunts and cousins learning the esoteric ways of spice blending and traditional cooking.
